Time Management Tips for Parents
Time Management Tips for Parents in Online Homeschooling
Online homeschooling is a popular option for parents who want to take an active role in their children’s education. However, it can also be a challenging undertaking, especially when it comes to managing time effectively. To ensure that you’re able to achieve a healthy work-life-homeschool balance, it’s essential to have a robust time management plan in place. Here are some detailed tips to help you manage your time effectively while homeschooling.
As a homeschool mom, I’ve tried and tested these time management tips for homeschooling and hope they will be as helpful for you as for me.
1. Create a Flexible Schedule
Firstly, it’s important to create a comprehensive, flexible schedule for effective time management.
Start by creating a list of all the regular and non-regular tasks that need to be completed each day, including:
- homeschool-related activities,
- work, and
- household chores.
Then, prioritize each task based on its importance and urgency.
I like to put numbers (not time slots) next to each task to indicate the order of importance.
This means the most important homeschool tasks happen first, and the least important get left till last or sometimes don’t happen – and that’s okay.
The trick is to keep things to more of a routine than a schedule so things don’t get stressful.
2. Set Realistic Goals
When creating your schedule, it’s essential to set realistic goals.
Trying to do too much in a day can lead to feeling overwhelmed and stressed.
Instead, break down your tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks.
This approach helps you accomplish more without feeling like you’re constantly racing against time.
Feel free to go through your list a second time in the morning and cross out things that might just tip you over the edge if there’s too much!
3. Take Regular Breaks
It’s crucial for you and your children to take regular breaks throughout the day to recharge and stay focused.
Set aside some time each day for self-care activities like exercise, meditation, or reading.
I get my children who are in primary school to spend three hours in the afternoon after lunch doing quiet time.
This consists of them listening to books off this complete homeschool booklist for K-12. Plus my children also play with their toys quietly in their room or toy room.
Almost all of the books on the above booklist can be found on YouTube as free audio recordings like this one.
Also, make sure you have a good book to get some homeschool encouragement from. Charlene from Notgrass has a wonderful homeschool encouragement diary.
This will help you stay energized and alert, and it will also improve your mood and overall well-being.
4. Use Technology to Your Advantage
Technology can be a powerful tool in managing your time effectively.
There are many apps and tools available that can help you stay organized and focused.
For example, productivity apps can help you create to-do lists, set reminders, and track your progress.
Online calendars can help you schedule appointments and meetings so you never miss an important event. My husband and I like to sync our Google calendars so we can book an event and know we’re both free.
Alternatively, there is also the humble notepad, which can be placed on a conspicuous spot where you’ll notice the daily tasks.
(If you want some more help with homeschooling, I offer the Homeschool Parenting Program. It’s like a 101 Home Education course for parents who feel they don’t know where to start. It will help you find your feet and give you confidence before you start your first homeschool lesson!)

5. Involve Your Children
Involving your children in the homeschooling process can benefit both you and your child. For this I will recommend you Abeka Academy or Acellus academy reviews. It helps them feel like they’re also responsible and directing their own education.
To do this, you can let them help you choose the right homeschool curriculum for both of you – making it a collaborative effort!
Also, assign them tasks that they can do independently, such as reading assignments or online research.
This approach frees up some of your time and helps your child take ownership of their education.
6. Establish a Routine
Establishing a routine is essential to managing your time effectively.
This means setting specific (or sometimes vague) times for activities like waking up, eating meals, and going to bed.
By having a consistent routine, you’ll be able to better manage your time and ensure that you’re staying on track with your homeschooling curriculum and other responsibilities.
7. Join a Support Group
Joining a support group can be a great way to connect with other homeschooling parents and get advice and support.
There are many online homeschool groups available, and you can also look for local groups in your area.
You can also try to find a homeschool co-op, which is a place where your kids can learn together and moms can support and encourage one another.
By connecting with other parents who are going through the same experience, you’ll be able to share tips, offer support, and feel less alone.
8. Be Flexible
One of the biggest advantages of homeschooling is the flexibility it provides.
Don’t be afraid to adjust your schedule or routine as needed. If something isn’t working, try something else.
By being flexible, you’ll be able to better manage your time and ensure that your homeschooling experience is a success.
9. Do a Course

10. Choose the Right Curriculum
When it comes to homeschooling, there are several methods to choose from, including:
- classical like Memoria Press and Veritas Press Online
- Charlotte Mason like Simply Charlotte Mason and A Gentle Feast
- traditional like BJU Press, Acellus, and Abeka academy
- unschooling – just do it through interests and a good homeschool booklist!
- unit studies like Notgrass and Gather Round
- eclectic like Schoolhouse Teachers
Each method has its own philosophy and approach to learning, so it’s important to research and understand them before choosing one that aligns with your family’s values and educational goals.
Classical Method
Classical homeschooling, for example, emphasizes the study of the liberal arts, such as
- grammar,
- logic, and
- rhetoric,
The classical homeschool method is based on the idea that education should be rigorous and systematic.
Charlotte Mason Homeschool Method
The Charlotte Mason homeschooling method, on the other hand, focuses on:
- living books,
- nature study, and
- narration.
These elements are is designed to cultivate a love of learning and a sense of wonder in children.
Traditional Homeschool Method, Unschooling & Eclectic
Traditional homeschooling follows a structured approach that mimics traditional school, while unschooling is a more child-led approach that allows children to pursue their interests and passions.
Eclectic homeschooling combines elements from various methods to create a customized approach that works best for the family.
Affordability
In terms of affordability, there are many free or affordable options available, such as online resources, libraries, and curriculum swaps.
However, some families may prefer to invest in paid curriculum options that offer more structure, support, and (generally) quality.
But, it’s important to note that expensive doesn’t always mean better, and it’s possible to create a high-quality homeschool education on a budget.
When it comes to curriculum options, there are both open-and-go programs that require minimal prep work and hands-on, crafty programs that require more time and effort.
The choice depends on the family’s preferences and availability.
There are also self-paced programs that encourage mastery-based learning, which means kids can study at their own pace.
Be Encouraged!
But you should be encouraged if you choose this way of education. I was homeschooled, and I loved it! I am now homeschooling my kids, and I love doing it!
Online homeschooling can be a challenging but rewarding experience for parents.
But, by following these detailed time management tips, you can achieve a healthy balance between work, homeschooling, and personal life.
Remember to create a comprehensive schedule, set realistic goals, take regular breaks, use technology to your advantage, involve your children, establish a routine, prioritize self-care, join a support group, and be flexible.
With a little bit of planning and effort, you can make the most of your time and enjoy the benefits of homeschooling.
